Platform & Build
The Toyota Highlander is built on a unibody (car-like) platform. This gives it a smoother, more car-like ride, better fuel economy, and a more refined experience on tarmac roads. However, it has less ground clearance and off-road capability than a body-on-frame SUV.
The Lexus GX 460 shares its platform with the Toyota Prado — a proper body-on-frame truck chassis. This makes it significantly more capable on rough terrain, with better ground clearance, a locking center differential, and genuine off-road credentials. If your vehicle will regularly encounter bad roads, the GX wins.
Engine & Performance
- Highlander: 3.5L V6, ~295 hp — smooth, refined, excellent for city driving
- GX 460: 4.6L V8, ~301 hp — more power, more torque, better for load and terrain
For highway and city use, the Highlander's V6 is more fuel-efficient. For rough roads, heavy loads, or frequent off-road use, the GX's V8 torque is a clear advantage.

Being a Lexus, the GX 460 has a slight edge in interior luxury — premium leather, wood trim, and a refined cabin that feels more upmarket. The Highlander's interior is excellent for Toyota standards but doesn't quite match the GX's Lexus refinement.
